Staff Selection Commision (SSC) is an Indian Government Organization responsible for recruitment of various posts under several departments such as Ministries and Subordinate Offices. SSC conducts Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination for Grade-A and Grade-B posts There are three compulsory sections of CGL termed as Tier I, Tier II and Tier III while Tier IV is conducted for selected posts. Selection Procedure of SSC CGL Exam:
- Tier-1: Written Examination (Objective Type carrying 200 marks)
- Tier-2: Written Examination (Objective Type carrying 200 marks)
- Tier-3: Written Examination (Descriptive Type carrying 100 marks)
- Tier-4: Computer Test/ Skill Test (where necessary)
SSC CGL 2016-17: Tier-1 Syllabus and Format
Tier-1 is objective type and conducted online. There are 100 questions for 200 marks and a deduction of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer. It is divided into four sections that are stated in the table below.

Covers Classification and Analogy of Numbers, Letters, General Knowledge and Meaning Based questions. Further, Coding-Decoding, Puzzles, Matrix, Word Formation, Arranging Words, Venn Diagram, Direction & Distances, Blood Relations Missing Numbers, Series, Verbal & Non Verbal Reasoning.
- General Awareness
Topics such as Indian History, Culture, Geography, Environment, Economy, Polity, Biology, Chemistry, Physics + Space Science, Computer and Mobile Technology, Diseases Pollution, Nutrition, Current Affairs, GK-Sports, News, Books and Dates.
Simplification, Interest, Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Average, Problems on Ages, Speed Distance Time, Profit Loss, Number Series, Number System, Mensuration, Data Interpretation, Time & Work, Mixture Problems, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry.
- English Comprehension
Reading Comprehension, Fill in the Blanks, Spellings, Phrases or Idioms, Synonyms and Antonyms, One Word Substitution, Sentence Correction and Error Spotting are a part of exam.

SSC CGL 2016-17: Tier-2 Syllabus and Format
There are four separate papers of this tier. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are compulsory for all posts while Paper 3 is for “Statistical Investigator II” and “Compiler” and Paper 4 is for “Assistant Audit Officer”. Each paper carries 200 marks and for the duration of 2 hours. There is negative marking of 0.50 marks for all papers except paper 3, in which 0.25 marks are deducted.

Tier-3 is descriptive type test that is conducted offline. This exam carries 100 marks and time allotted to this paper is 60 minutes. The exam will be based on the writing of essay/ precis /letter /application writing etc.
