About PTE

  • PTE or Pearson Test of English is related to the study of the English language which was launched worldwide in 2009
  • It is now being accepted by the Australian government for visas
  • It has 2 types – PTE Academic and PTE General
  • PTE Academic is computer based and PTE General is paper and interview based
  • In both academic and general tests, the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of a candidate are tested
  • The PTE Academic is of 3 hours whereas the duration for PTE General depends on the level chosen
  • Administered by- Harvard Business School, INSEAD and Yale University, Australian universities, New Zealand universities, STEM Institutions USA and Ireland Education board
  • Conducted multiple times in year (May, June, August, November and December)

Why PTE?

Non-native English speakers can take the test if they wish to study in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and United States of America. It can also be taken by researchers, teachers and people seeking jobs abroad.

Eligibility Conditions

No Eligibility Conditions are required for the PTE test. However, it is mostly taken by the students, researchers, professionals, teachers and international workers.

Structure of Test

For Pearson Test of English Academic

Sections No. of Questions and Content Minutes
Speaking and Writing Speaking session requires recording of the voice in a microphone. The candidate has to read aloud, describe an image, answer questions and re-tell what he or she hears from an available audio.

For the writing session, candidates are asked to summarize a written text and write an essay of 200-300 words.

45–57 minutes
Reading Candidates need to read a given text and answer short questions. Additional questions require them to re-order paragraphs and fill in the blanks. 32–41 minutes
Break 10 minutes
Listening This section carries 7 questions

Listening items videos and audio clips based on British,                     American, and Australian accents. Questions relevant to audio and video clips are asked.

45–57 minutes

Speaking test is the second section of 7 minutes in which questions based on sustained monologue, role play, discussion and describing of a picture are involved.

Level 3

(2 sections)

First section consists of 9 parts based on listening, writing and reading questions.

Speaking test is the second section of 7 minutes in which questions based on sustained monologue, role play,                               2 hours

discussion and describing of a picture are involved.

Level 4

(2 sections)

First section consists of 9 parts based on listening, writing and reading questions. Speaking test is the second section of 8 minutes in which questions based on sustained monologue, role play, discussion and describing of a picture are involved. 2 hours and 30 minutes + 8 minutes
Level 5

(2 sections)

First section consists of 9 parts based on listening, writing and reading questions. Speaking test is the second section of 8 minutes in which questions based on sustained monologue, role play, discussion and describing of a picture are involved. 2 hours and 30 minutes + 8 minutes

Fees

The fee for the test is between US$200-300. However, it may vary from country to country. The standard fee required of Indian students for the test is INR 10,900. Late fee costs are INR 13,625.

Scores

The candidates are scored on a scale of 10 to 90 points.

PTE Preparation

Even though PTE is not a testing system in India, it is better that candidates try and choose the most suitable institute for themselves. In Chandigarh, there are some very good institutes for PTE from where you can obtain excellent coaching.
