About GRE

  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a test considered as an admission requirement for most of the US and Canadian Universities
  • Developed and owned by Educational Testing Service (ETS) in 1949
  • It tests the candidate on the basis of verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills
  • It allows you to get admission into Master’s or doctoral degree programs
  • The scores of GRE are also accepted by various business schools, but not all.
  • Duration of test is 3 hours & 45 minutes
  • Not related to any specific study field
  • Computer-based (Held multiple times in a year)
  • Paper-based test ( Held in October, November and February ), where computer based test is not possible

To get admissions in most of the the graduate schools or business schools in USA, or other countries

Eligibility Conditions

No official educational requirement. Intended for Graduate or undergraduate students.

Structure of Test

Verbal Reasoning

(2 sections)

Each section carries 20 questions

Each section includes a mix of reading comprehension question, text completion, and sentence equivalence questions.

Quantitative Reasoning
(2 sections)
Each section carries 20 questions,
Each quantitative reasoning section contains a mix of multiple choice, quantitative analysis, and user input questions.
35 minutes each
(70 minutes in total)
Analytic Writing

(2 essays)

The two essays include an issue essay and an argument essay 30 minutes each
(60 minutes in total)
Break 10 minutes
Unscored Section* An experimental or research section This section does not count toward final score. It is used by ETS to try out new questions for possible use in future exams. It can be verbal or quantitative Approx 25 minutes

Note: 1 minute break is provided after every section and 10 minutes break after 3rd section. Experimental or Research (unscored section) is not included in Paper-based test

Fees

The test fee of GRE over worldwide is $205

Scores

There is a standard scoring scale that allot marks to the candidate as follows:

  • Verbal Reasoning: 130–170
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 130–170
  • Analytical Writing: 0–6
